The Fighter
Watched The Fighter last week. It wasn't a must-watch on my list bust since there's the Oscar buzz and nothing else interesting was opening yet, I went ahead with it. Christian Bale wasn't exactly a sight to marvel at given that he's this out-and-out ex-boxing champ now hooked on coke. His half-brother, Mark Wahlberg, is trying to keep the family spirit alive while increasingly realising the damage that's done to him by his family. So on and on, a boxing drama. But I've never seen Mark Wahlberg in a credible acting role and this must be one of them. His turns in Boogie Nights and The Departed etc. were pretty much him being him. I thought he was emotional in The fighter and definitely more deserving of an Oscar nod than say, Christian Bale since that role was pretty much cut out for bad boy behaviour and almost a sure shot at some nods. Perhaps it's a strategy 'cos Mark Wahlberg is nominated as part of a trio for the Best Picture category.
Anyway, I was impressed by Mark. Never saw him in this light.
