five person expedition to the archeological dig site. A massively tall senior with a metal head-esque appearance was leading the way. Blindly, I followed as we navigated the wooded paths that made up most of Conserve's 1200 acres. Within five minutes, I had lost all of my bearings.

To make matters worse, the aforementioned senior, Nenad, didn't seem to know exactly where he was going, either. We took one path then he decided that we had taken the wrong one and we had to walk back. When we finally got there, I'd be turned around so many times that I couldn't have found my way if my life depended on it.

Aside from all of that, the scavenger hunt was mildly enjoyable. I felt like I was getting to know the people in my wing and, thanks to the brother-sister wing system, people who weren't my wing mates. We were made to play games in trying to learn peoples names and, for that first week at least, it was impossible to have any time alone. If I had to congratulate the Conserve administration on one thing, orientation would probably take that honor. They sure did start us off on the right foot.

Starting off on the right foot might have had something to do with the atmosphere, too. It was such a beautiful August in the Northwoods. I simply couldn't stay indoors. I took my guitar down to the soccer fields one afternoon. Willow tagged along, didgeridoo in hand. It was the first time I played music with her. Let's just say that Evanescence's "My Immortal" can be greatly improved by a shitty singer, simple guitar chords, and an African instrument that specializes in drones. Well, at least from the perspective of those playing it.

These jam sessions became almost daily ordeals. We'd sit in the wing, jamming out. Dawn would sometimes chip in with her ocarina. We were kind of like a circus act, but we were pretty good for a bunch of misfits.
