It was working, I was busy, and focused on the swimming lessons. The shrill of the long whistle blast interrupted me; it indicated the last buddy check before a favorite part of every Lifeguard's day; Lunch. This is a time when the pool is closed and guards sit under the umbrella at the table and break bread together, speek of the days events and what's to happen that night. We talk about our lunches; grilled chicken & sweet potatoes, clucking Russians, fruits, yogurts, almonds, steak and salsa wraps, followed by consuming copious amounts of water. Water, the genisis of all life.
Many times we discuss the problems we have and many times can come togehter in helping each other come up with solutions. It's very Gestalt like; we talk, listen share, and eat, but intead of an office and a couch, we are poolside seated around the table enjoying nature. Our topics range from dating, school, college, movies, (some guards are big movie buffs), music, clubs, sports, Yankees, football and health & fitness.
I was lucky with my mystery sammich today. The guards saw a lump in tinfoil, i opened it up, one of my favorites, 1/2 a chicken parm. No first bite were called on me, they gave me a bye, great bunch of guards, nothing needed to be said. I enjoyed my lunch followed by slugs of water.
My phone rang, it never rings, i was cool. I told Janette to call if she had more tests and stuff. She told me they just finished a CAT Scan. No Results, Still felt very anxious and had 3 more hours 'til work finished.
Linch over, we resumend our duties; guards rotating around the chairs, buddy checks, and myself giving swiming lessons. I was water logged by the time the day was nearly ended, half from the pool, half from my own eyes.
I didn't wait to close down the pool, I had the next in command, Felix, take care of those duties. I hopped in the Jeep and grabbed my kids in the circle and headed towards the Medical Center. still wet, clothed in bathing suits and worn T-shirts, me in my red guard suit and shirt we got our visitor passes and headed up to the 7th floor.
