"I haven't spoken to anyone but the people I work with and some of my friends...Amanda, right?"
Her eyes narrowed. "Nobody came to speak to you?"
Okay. Maybe getting her angry isn't a good idea.
"Uh...."
Her mouth pressed to a thin line. "Unbelievable." A spike of lightning lit the room as she turned and stalked to the window. "I'm going to KILL the Messengers! You hear me?? They are DEAD!"
Noah grabbed his phone and flipped it open while she raged at things that weren't there. He wasn't a psychologist, but he was pretty sure she was schizophrenic or something. Bipolar, maybe. Hopefully, whatever it was she was sick with wouldn't make her want to kill him. The sudden violence in her startled him, badly.
"Put the phone down, Noah."
The weariness in her voice had him freezing, and he looked up from the number pad to see her bracing her hands against the windowsill, her shoulders slumped as thunder growled, barely muffled by the brick and glass.
"I'm not going to hurt you. In fact, that's the exact opposite of what I want."
His thumb hovered over the 'Send' button. "Pardon?"
Noah watched as Amanda straightened, settled her shoulders, and turned to face him. Whatever emotions she'd been feeling, they were either gone or buried, because nothing showed on her face.
"Let's begin again. My name is Amanda, and I am your Guardian Angel."
He burst out laughing. It probably wasn't the smartest thing to do, not to mention the least polite, but he couldn't help it. "An angel? Really? That's what you're going with here? Angels?"
Nothing in her expression changed. "Yes."
"Lady, you are barking up the wrong tree."
A twitch of her lips, though he couldn't tell if it had been leaning towards a smile or a frown.
"I don't believe in all that stuff," he clarified, shaking his head. "Other people can believe what they want, but me, I need proof before I start going to church every Sunday."
It turned out that she was headed towards a frown. "You are not religious?"
"Not at all. I don't believe in angels."
She crossed her arms. "Do you know that every time you say that, an angel loses its wings?"
