He looked back to his desk, watching as the vapor laptop appeared and then the otherworldly sound of a voice came out of the hallway and all three turned. "Charlie?" The memory was powerful and the voice called out the victim's name again. The spectral vision shivered and it was obvious to Ellie that he was not going to be staying much longer.
"I thought it was just Loraine, my housekeeper so I didn't pay her any attention," the spectral voice said with a sigh. "I was bent low over the keyboard when ... it all went black." The victim looked at Danton for a moment. "How ..." Danton shook his head slowly.
"So Loraine was in your house before it all went black? Did you hear anyone come in?" Danton was feeling the strain of keeping him here in this world and needed the answers to his questions. The spectral form shook his head slowly and Danton moved closer. "Show me," he commanded quietly his voice soft velvet over the rough stones. Suddenly, the two became one and the specter went into Danton ... his eyes were closed for long moments and when they shot open the pale blue had faded into a deep jade green.
As Ellie watched him, he fell in an almost comical slow motion, sinking to the floor in a heap. She got up and moved over to him and waited, not in a hurry to wait for him to come back to consciousness, parking herself on the balls of her feet and looking at him carefully. She always told people that if you wanted to know pain, live a day in Danton's life ... experience the death of others as if you actually died. She could see the deep lines of his face and knew it was not what he would want.
He came to with her staring at him and his the deep emerald green of his eyes startled her. "There was no noise," he almost whispered. "Who is Loraine and have you spoke with her yet?"
Ellie shook her head, offering her hand. "We can't find her anywhere. Can you give me anything?" Danton stood shakily, his eyes hours behind as he skillfully scanned through the memories of the dead man. His eyes opened, they had changed colors again to a pale golden yellow and he looked rather shocked.
"The voice calling his name wasn't Loraine, it was someone else. A man pretending to be a woman ... or a man dressed as a woman ... whomever it was they were pretending." He tried to support himself and failed miserably, tripping into the bed and being caught by Ellie again. "I'm sorry, his memory is so vacant ... he was too focused."
