How Far Would You Go?
We traveled for a while, zigzagging around each other and laughing boisterously. After about an hour of slow riding I led us over to our favorite spot near a lake that was about 100 miles from the castle. The lake was rather small in circumference, but made up for it in depth. The farthest Viktorya and I had ever swum into its depths was nearly 75 leagues down. It was surrounded on three sides by thick, dense forest that extended for miles in each direction. On the fourth side, the one we were on, there was a single, massive oak tree beneath which was a lunch laid out on a red blanket. The sun was casting a blood-red light over the treetops, leaving my eyes temporarily dazzled.
We rode up quietly and dismounted, stumbling slightly from riding so long. I didn’t bother to tie the horses up; they wouldn’t be able to get very far anyway. "Aron, it’s so wonderful," Viktorya commented as we sat down on the blanket.
"Happy Birthday," I said, snatching a strawberry from the food laid out. I slipped it slowly between her lips, staining them both red. She smirked and leaned over to pluck a blueberry from the pile. She took it gently between her fingers and parted my lips with her mouth. I kissed her seductively when she suddenly popped the berry between my lips. I crushed it with my tongue, tasting the sweetness spreading over my tongue slowly. I kissed her one more time, sharing the saccharine flavor with her. Without looking away she took an apple, cut it in half, and threw it towards the horses. When we finally broke apart I jumped up and slipped off my shirt. "Let’s go swimming," I said gleefully, tossing my breeches down with my shirt. Viktorya’s face lit up with a smile. Swimming was her favorite thing to do, next only to horseback riding.
Within seconds we were both in the water nearly fifty feet down. Neither of us needed to breathe; on of the many perks of being a vampire. I followed Viktorya down through the darkness, watching the fish scatter upon out arrival. They never took kindly to predators in their home.
Viktorya led the way to our favorite underwater cove. It was filled with plants of all colors; reds, purples, blues, violets; almost every color imaginable. I pulled her into my arms and clutched her body to mine. She was my mate, mine in every sense of the word, just as much as I was hers. My thoughts began to drift to how I first met her, all those years ago.
I had been on patrol of my kingdom, which had been much smaller than it was now. I caught the strong scent of a newborn vampire near the edge of my territory and, well, I nearly drowned in the force of my mahkna, the need to defend my home and belongings. Fangs bared and eyes wild I ran off in search of this offender, leaving my guard far behind. What I found, however, melted my mahkna into the snowy ground. A woman of no more than twenty lay sprawled in a
