I can remember the first day of instruction. Raylene walked in wearing the standard gray Rooian jumpsuit. She still had long hair then, I was mesmerized by it. The way it moved, it swayed and shined with grace. I had never seen anyone with long hair. On Rooi women and men must keep their hair no longer than shoulder length, Rule 139. It's impractical to have long hair when working in the mines. Her nails were whiter than mine, her teeth were whiter than man, even her skin was whiter than mine. Although only seven I could tell she was different than us. Her body shape was even different than ours. Mama and papa, were lean but muscular from working in the mines. Raylene, on the other hand, she was full. She had breast and thighs, her checks were like two mountains peaks. Everything about her screamed that she had never even dreamed of working, much less partook in it. She was in every way a true Earther, born and bred. She looked proud, simply because she was proud. Her head was high and her walk told me that she knew she was better than us. I began disliking her then. Though, it wasn't until she opened her mouth that I began to hate her. It wasn't her tone, really, that filled me with disgust. Her voice was sweet, much like my own mothers. No, my hatred spurned from the words and phrases she used to introduce her self:
"Class my name is Raylene Noor. You may call me Mrs. Noor. I am Mrs. because I am married. Well, I once was married. He, my husband is deceased. Nevertheless, I am Mrs. Noor and I am an Earther. What am I doing here you may ask, well I have been assigned to Sector 1 to teach you. I assume by now that you realize that within each Sector an instructor is assigned to teach you. You are part of the North American Sector and as such I am from the North American region. I assume you know by now that each of the seven regions has its own sector, some are larger than others of course because of the Great Short Out of 2205. We are the largest sector because our the lessers were smart enough to move in the Great Migration off 2180, before the Great Short Out. Those who did not die in the GSO migrated to Rooi in the year after during the migration of 2208. You and your ancestors were brought here to work in the Kmet mines. Kmet is what fuels earth thereby fueling your existence. John always said that without Kmet you all would be utterly useless. In fact, I doubt highly that Rooi would be inhabited today. In my class you will learn only what is useful to you, and what will make you use full to us, to them. You will learn writing and reading, because you will need to learn it to read the signs in the mines, and to write reports on your progress IF you move up in the ranks.
