to make my collection completed for the season. Then I can be filled until the next season!"
Jody wanted to scream. He wanted to call to his friends for help. He wanted to end this nightmare. More importantly, he just wanted to get out of there. His feet would not move no matter how much he willed them. His arms would not move. He could not scream. The man in green placed both hands on Jody's head, looked up at the sky and said, "He's mine! Do you hear me? He's mine and I'm taking him with me. There is nothing you or anyone can do."
At that moment the sky cleared. The red diamond around the field disappeared, and the air cleared at once. There was a large clap of thunder and a huge red flash. The other boys had to cover their eyes immediately to keep from being blinded.
Once the other six were able to look back at the field, Jody and the man in green were gone. Brent looked around and straightened his ball cap. He looked at the other guys. Nobody returned the gaze, they all just looked down.
"Jay, Cal, Bobo, Jim, Mark. You guys okay?" Somehow, through this, Brent had become the unofficial leader. "Everyone remember the story? It's simple. We came down to bat some balls, we left and we haven't seen Jody since."
"It took Jody, Brent," Jay seemed to scream.
Mark quickly chimed in, "We can't let this go at some stupid kidnapping. Jody's picture is going to look at me from the back every milk carton from here until doomesday!"
"OK. We agreed. Let the Green have Jody and he would leave all the rest of us alone, at least until the season is over...whatever that means."
"Yeah, exactly what did it mean," asked Cal. "That thing said wait for a season and where did these lights come from?"
Jay started walking off. He almost appeared to be in a daze. Mark called out to him and waited until Jay turned to look. Mark made a zipping motion on his mouth. "Remember. We say nothing." Jay nodded and continued to walk away.
Two weeks later the police had completed their investigation and Jody's picture was sent out on the wire. Before long, all the boys saw the milk cartons. Most of the time they just turned the picture away and went about their business as if nothing had happened. After all, the man in green had not been back and fall, winter, spring and summer had all made one rotation. It appeared that the "season" that was spoken about was not a yearly season or a baseball season. Life went on as normal as could be for the boys.
