renewed energy. “You must be careful now, as I am a known opponent to the Master's methods.”

“I am not afraid,” Roslan said unconvincingly, “at least not enough to abandon you,” he concluded more honestly.

Namel smiled. “I thank you for your loyalty, but desire it not. I would rather you pledge your loyalty to the people you serve and devote yourself to integrity.”

“And how am I to learn how to lead them without your direction? Is there another to whom I can turn?” Roslan asked stubbornly.

“Several, but I would not compromise their efforts by such an open display of support. No, you have a choice. You can follow me into exile as my loyal student, or you can graduate into Court politics and intrigue.”

Roslan looked uncertain. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, you can become my eyes and ears. Develop and open distaste for my guidance. After all, you were assigned to my care upon enrollment and must continue to assist me as part of your studies. If you are good, and I am lucky, you will be approached by another who will offer unofficial guidance to make up for my short-comings. At the very least, you will be able to learn from your fellows how their mentors are directing them, which will provide some insight into how Heron directs them all.”

“You...you want me to deceive,” Roslan was astonished.

“Yes, and I suppose my remarks concerning integrity are now called into question,” Namel settled back into his chair. “It is regrettable, but it is the game of the courts. You need not play if you prefer to remain clean, but power leaves its mark on us all, and I am no exception.”

Roslan thought for quite some time while his mentor watched the flames. At last he spoke, and slowly, “I will do as you ask.”
