She woke up and rolled over vigorously, as if just awoken by some haunting, unsettling dream. She fidgeted, playing with her tanktop, pulling it down over her stomach to keep herself warm. She grabbed the blankets in her delicate hands and positioned them beneath her chin. She slept this way a lot lately, with her face buried in the comfort and security of the sheets. It was a physical manifestation of some incomprehensible loss she never spoke of.
Her eyes slowly opened, her face to the window where the morning sun was shining. The sky was a perfect blue with just a few small clouds floating around. She reached out her hand towards the open window and felt a warm breeze on her bare arm. A pair of large, brown eyes blinked several times and then widened slightly. Without warning, a beautiful and infectious smile began to form, a smile that had been hiding away from the world for quite some time now. She giggled softly to herself as she took in the beaming new day. For some strange reason she felt as though she held the entire universe between the tip of her finger and the tip of a ray of sunlight. She felt inspired. It was the closest she felt to hopeful in months. She hadn't felt this way since...
"BEEEEEP BEEEEP BEEEEP BEEEEP!" Her alarm sounded violently next to her head. She slammed her hand down on the snooze button instantaneously. It was a Saturday morning. No need to get up. Suddenly, she felt a slight shift of weight beside her and a lean arm fall lazily over her waist. She heard some soft morning groans, an obnoxious yawn and then...
"Was that the alarm? What time is it? Dess...Dessa...Dess, are you awake?" Dessa rolled over to face the woman lying next to her.
"Oh fuck," she thought to herself. "This would be way less awkward if I could actually remember what her name is."
"Oh, you are up!" exclaimed a giddy, young Amanda. "Hey you," she whispered with a grin as she leaned in to kiss Dessa.
Dessa reluctantly accepted the kiss and nodded. There would be no response, no "Good morning", no smile in return. The night had ended. Dessa was done and it was time for "what's her name" to leave.
Not taking a hint, Amanda rolled on top of Dessa excitedly and began to tickle her. "Okay, what do you want for breakfast? I'm a great cook! I'll make you something special! What do you have for food? Let me make you something!"
Dessa stared at her, expressionless. "No, it's fine," she said, without the slightest bit of inflection. "I don't want anything."
"Come on, babyyyyyyyy," she begged. "Stop playing hard to get!" She released a burst of laughter
