"Heather, I need to talk to you. In private." Tessa said to me not so subtly after we'd been Christmas Shopping Bananza-ing for several hours.
"Sure Tess. Come over here and let's 'talk in private'." I grabbed her arm and walked several yards away from our group. "What's up?"
"I think...well I think your sisters fiance has a crush on you Heather. I don't think you two should hang out anymore." She said very frankly.
"What? That's nuts. What makes you think that?" I was a bit freaked because this was what I'd been thinking earlier. Did I somehow make it come true by thinking it? I'm going to find a million dollars on the street. I'm going to find a million dollars on the street next to a man who is just like Dom. I'm going to find a hundred dollars on the street next to a man who is just like Dom, please?
"Honey, he keeps giving you these looks. I don't know what you did. This is the first time I've seen any guy with a crush on you." Tess shook her head.
"This is the first time I've ever heard of a guy having a crush on me too. Shit! What do I do? No no no that's a stupid question. He's my sisters fiance! I don't do anything but avoid him as much as possible. Right? Sheesh, do I have to tell Fiona? Oh no, I don't want to be the thing that breaks them up!" And despite myself, I felt my heart rate speed up and giddy feelings sweep over me at the thought of a man as cute and handsome and smart and wonderful as Chris having a crush on me. I was immediately ashamed. What the heck? That's my sisters soon to be husband you moron! I yelled at my heart.
"I don't know. We'll have to think about it. You can't hang out with Chris anymore though. Just don't hang out in person. Try to talk only like, once a week. Okay?" Tess wrinkled her brow at me. "Okay. I can do that. Shoot! How did this happen?" I said sullenly. I really liked hanging out with Chris too...
"It's a mystery to me to Heather. Most guys don't even recognize that you HAVE charm much less fall for it! Especially guys who have your sister, who we all know is like Barbie come to life with smaller hips." Tess said.
"Yeah.." I sighed dejectedly. At least I got the quirky personality and awesome friends, I consoled myself.
"Girl talk?" Ralph asked as we walked back over to them.
"In a manner of speaking. I guess." I said. I wasn't up much for hanging out now. My mood had dropped severely. Maybe I should just go home and read a book. "I think I'm gonna go home. I'm sorry for leaving so abruptly guys, I had a lot of fun, really." I smiled at them before leaving.
