The girl sits at the counter. It's a cheap plastic imitation granite. She swivels around on the stool staring at a plate glumly as she speaks, an almost incessant whine. "Everyday I have the same thing. It's a greasy, burnt grilled cheese on my break. Do you know what GPA I graduated with? I was Vice President of student council. I am not supposed to be working as a waitress in some dinner with plastic that's supposed to look like leather." The man behind the counter comes over and swipes the sandwich off her plate. "So quit." "Hey! That was mine!" The bell over the door rings as two men enter. As they walk over to a table their conversation can be overheard. "-Total asshole, so I followed him and waited until he got out of the car before giving him a ticket. The dumbass had double parked!" They roar with laughter. A waitress pours them coffee. "So uh, how's the wife doing?" The vindictive cop sighs. "Still as frigid as ever. Doesn't even talk to me except to complain. Like I ain't hard working all day. Speaking of which, when do we clock out." "About four hours or so." "Perfect, we can go confiscate some beers before we end our shift. I tell you, you're lucky to not have some nagging hag on your case all the time." "That's me," he says "Mr. Lucky Alone guy." A waitress walks over. "How ya doing? The usual?" She enquires in a tone that conveys that she absolutely does not care how they are doing or what they would like to eat. "I see you're your usual charming self today Annie." "I ain't got all day, you gonna get the usual?""Yeah, the usual." The waitress leaving. "Isn't she just a ray of sunshine."
