She woke, gasping, inhaled the most refreshing air she'd ever had in her life. Drenched in sweat, she surveyed her surroundings to convince herself she was in her own room. Assured, she grasped her pillow; the same comforting pillow she'd had for years, complete with the indent created by her very own head. Finally, she exhaled. Breathing in and out was an ordeal at first. Slowly, as respiration became normal again, she realized that something was inexplicably wrong. Here was her bed, her dresser, he desk, her things. She even recognized the trophy she won for a writing class she took in college. It felt wrong. Almost demonic, as it screamed the same complacency she had always known so well, and whispered the horrible secret she had yet to discover. Sitting up made her body ache as though she had moved for the first time after completing the world's most trying marathon. She looked to her mirror. And examined the strange reflection that was staring back at her. Who was this girl? Yes, this was her face, her short pointed nose, her own moss green eyes. She raised her arms. They felt as though they were attached to 25 lbs. weights. After inspection, she knew that these were her arms. In fact, she was positive that her her hands, arms, feet, every finger and toe belonged to her. To her own horror, she realized her body was regular self. In an instant, she discovered that everything was the same as had been when she had fallen asleep. The chilling fear that something was wrong only grew as she understood nothing had changed. How could something this terrifying happen while she was cozy in her personal and protected space? She felt as though she could cry, but her eyes were dry and scratchy. No tears could be found in them. She reached for the cotton robe she had left on the edge of her bed the night before. Wrapping it around herself she found that it did not relieve the chill that was creeping through her body. In desperation, she laboriously stood and forced herself to walk out of the room; convinced the seed of the mysterious disturbance she felt inside must be outside her direct view. To her dismay, the halls and doors and rooms were all exactly as she had left them the day before.
