So she turned and smiled brightly at him, and nodded.
Thing was, Trent shouldn't be telling her it was okay. Last year, her junior year, she had tried to kill his best friend. But only because the jerk punched her and was ripping at her skirt and touching her in...places.

See, what happened was this; Lany's father died in a car accident in March of her sophomore year. When she went back, everyone treated her like she was made of glass. Lany just about went crazy with knowing everyone thought she was so breakable. So she had to prove she wasn't. Binge drinking coupled with marijuana and occasionally heroine made Lany into the girl she wanted people to think she was. Except, really she just wanted things to be normal again. She wanted to go back to being that honors kid who was so attractive but so paranoid about doing anything with anyone because she didn't want to get hurt. But she could never get back there. So she would settle for this. Trent's friend Jason smoked marijuana with her once. Their relationship started out playfully and made Lany happy at first. Then came the night when he was drunk and she wasn't. He had pulled her hair, and slapped her and called her horrible names. So Lany reached for the first thing she could find - a bottle opener- and stabbed him with it. Luckily, she missed any major arteries and didn't hit any organs. But he screamed and cursed and jumped away from her.

Of course, jason said nothing about it to anyone at school, except that she was crazy and had tried to kill him when he made a move. Only sometime later did Lany finally tell someone that he was a lying sleezeball.

One good thing came from that night; it woke her up. Lany was not this misbehaving, delinquent child. that wasn't who her father would want her to be. Making good grades, having good friends, these were the things that she'd done when her father was alive. Drugs were something she had sworn to him she'd never try. So she stopped doing them, and she stopped drinking and she went back to being the old Lany, if only a little bit tarnished.

It was amazing how people seemed to accept her once they saw the reason behind what had happened. Trent himself had taunted her and cussed at her for what she did to his friend only three months ago. Now he was apologizing.
