"Baby, no. Baby, no!" sobbed Steve. I could see him twisting the ring on his finger as he put together the enormity of the situation.
"I know what has to be done. I don’t want to be one of them," said Jen.
"I can’t go on without you. Don’t go without me!" said Steve. He crumbled into her arms.
"Make it quick," Jen told Tim resolutely.
"Me, too," said Steve.
"Steve, you’re being ridiculous. We need you!" said Heather.
"What is the point of this life if there is no love for me in it? I can’t go on without her. Either you finish me with her or you leave me with the Blighted and I’ll find my own way to end it."
The Blighted had started to come through the back door toward the small dock.
"Everyone, get in the boat and close your eyes," Tim said sternly.
I got in the boat and grabbed an oar and squeezed my eyes shut for the second time that night. Two more loud bangs and the boat was moving away from the dock. Tim had the other oar and beckoned me to paddle. It was now me, Tim, Celia, Heather, and Eric. We were a new battalion crossing the Delaware for freedom. Was this the plan? As I paddled, I looked up at the clear sky to see the stars.
"No one is holy like the Lord, for there is none besides You, nor is there any rock like our God."
That God is really something, huh?
