James had timed it all perfectly. It had been exactly one year ago that he had been snuggling with her on the couch. One year since he'd said those words, "Hannah, will you be my girlfriend?"
Now it sounded a little bit silly and childish. But at the time they were sweet words of innocent love. Hannah had thought they were wonderful. He could still picture the mocking look of deep deliberation before she giggled, "Yes."
His manhood was taking a blow for this very special date, but he could care less. It was December 23rd, and he had a weight in his coat pocket that could not, would not be ignored.
The first stop that evening had been Andiamo's. He'd even sprung for the valet to impress her. When he told the hostess their reservation, she nodded knowingly and brought them to the intimate corner table he'd requested. Also per his request, she left no menus. He could tell she was confused, but he silenced her by taking her hand in his. He raised it to his lips and pressed a kiss on her fingers while keeping their eyes locked. He would never tire of that sweep of pink across her cheeks.
He complimented her exquisite dress and she smirked. "You paid for it." He shook his head and told her it was worth every penny. He continued to stroke her hand and hold it close to his lips and cheek. He would never know how it was that her skin was so smooth.
The waiter approached and ran through his greeting and the specials for the evening. He asked after their beverage preference. James asked for two glasses of ice water and a bottle of their very finest Pinot Noir. He watched her eyebrows raise slightly, but chose not to comment. Instead, he cut her a slice of bread and fed it to her; wanting so badly to kiss those glistening lips.
The wine arrived at the table and James lifted his glass, "To the best year of my life." They toasted.
They were both leaned forward, as close to each other as they could be without feeling uncomfortable. He whispered of the light coming from her eyes. Her response was to make a joke about already too much wine, but he could see a touch of pink around her cheeks. "Happy Anniversary," she smiled at him with a tilted head.
