Ulfred the Ungainly: A Viking Saga
1.
There was a man named Kvedulf, son of Kvederf. Kvederf was the son of Ulf the Beautiful and Hrodulf the Hairy. Hrodulf the Hairy owned a farm in Stad, near South More, where he was greatly respected by many men. His son Kvederf was known throughout the land for his vicious temper, and shrewd mind. When spring came to South More Hrodulf and Kvederf felt it was time to leave and go raiding, so they gathered as many men, supplies, and sturdy, well stocked ships as they could. Hrodulf, being a respected man, was able to gather twelve ships and many men to travel with. Kvederf and Hrodulf set off, along with their men.
2.
Shortly into their voyage the men were beset by sickness and disease. Illness and malady crept through the ships striking many men, until finally the pestilence caught up with Hrodulf. Hrodulf called one of his men, a reliable young man named Kvedold to his bedside. Kvedold was the son of Kvedern and had served Hrodulf faithfully for most of his life. Hrodulf asked Kvedold to pass on a message to Kvederf once the two ships landed. Hrodulf told Kvedold, "I see great things in store for my son. He will gain much respect and noteriety from this voyage, and he will earn himself a beautiful and clever wife, and they will have many children together. However, I also see that all being taken from him if he continues to be unable to control his temper. I see-" and what else Hrodulf saw in store for Kvederf we shall never know, for he died then.
3. Kvederf made for the land of the Saxons, and attacked them mercilessly. He returned from the voyage a much wealthier man, and went home to South More to tell Ulf the Beautiful what fate had befallen her husband. Kvederf took up the farm and ran it well, earning respect and approbation from his friends and neighbors. Kvederf took for his wife a woman named Hildirid, who was both as fair and witty as Hrodulf predicted. They had nine children, five sons and four daughters. All of their sons were strong and brave, with the exception of Ulfred.
