Dr. Akroyd did not seem to notice. "Excellent. Are you familiar then with the nine choirs of angels?"
"Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels."
"Exactly"
"Well theologians, who were the scientists of their days, believed that angels, by the power of God, provided the force and movement for the planets. Over time, Kepler, Copernicus, Newton and Einstein gave us greater and greater depth of understanding of the way in which celestial bodies moved, but the truth is that even to this day we do not fully understand how fundamental forces such as gravity work."
"You're talking about the Grand Unified Theory."
Dr. Akroyd stopped short. "Hippakaloric! I thought you were a mystic?"
"I read newspapers in addition to tea leaves and treatises on meditation" Harold replied dryly.
"Oh, yes. Of course. My apologies. Are you really a tasseomancer?"
"No."
"Excellent. The point is that I believe that those theologians were correct, that the Grand Unified Theory can be found in mysticism, in the understanding of the relationships between spirit and matter, angels and the cosmos."
"Well, sure. Any kid who's gotten through the first Baltimore Catechism can tell you that."
"I'm not talking about some abstract faith-based concept of God's role as Creator and the action of the Word but concrete instances of angelic responsibility over every level of matter from gluon to galaxy clusters."
"Guardian angels of the Laws of Physics?"
"Precisely." Dr. Akroyd flipped the board back over and indicated the formulas.
Harold rose to his feet. "Of course, Enochian." He studied the board as Dr. Akroyd stepped back, slightly bemused. Musing over the writings, Harold said, "I don't understand all of this, but..." He looked at Dr. Akroyd, "...Are you combining Enochian and Gemmatria?"
"By the rings of Saturn, yes!" Dr. Akroyd's eyes began to glow with inspiration. "Working from a base 21 system, I've begun to unite patterns of forces in ways no mortal's ever been able." The microwave dinged on cue. "Coffee?"
"Thanks." Harold sipped his coffee, which actually was good. "Dr. Akroyd?"
