I didn't have to consider long. Moments later, I heard Kai sit up and stretch, the buzz and shrill of knuckles running along nylon unmistakable against the birds and crickets setting up a racket outside.
Soon, he was rustling around in his backpack, and I knew I'd get no peace now.
Rolling back over and letting my hair fall away from my face, I ran a hand back through it and felt sleep finally begin to fall away from me like mist rising slowly off a lake, stickiness beginning to dry out of my skin.
Kai, his hair even more ruffled than before, put one hand to either side of me and leaned down, pecking me neatly on the lips.
"Rise and shine, sweetheart" he said. I stared up at him impassively, trying to exude my hatred for all morning people through my pores. He eventually got bored - or maybe his arms hurt - and, sitting back on his haunches like a cat, tore open the zip of the tent and let the light and cold flood in.
While he puttered about our fire from the night before, which was still a smouldering pile of ash. Rolling over onto my side, I propped myself up on an elbow and watched him for a moment and promptly got bored.
