The Adventures of Nina Treeheart
She stood in the middle of a nearly empty field. Naked. Her arms and legs were spread wide, letting the wind encompass her, waiting for a rain that didn't come. The wind circled her. Caressing her skin, touching every nook and cranny of her body. Places she wasn't even aware existed. It was the sort of wind that could pick a person up off the safe ground and teach them to fly. She was refreshed. She was renewed.
Seeing that you don't see naked women standing in the middle of nearly empty fields every day, I feel like she owes you some explanations. Her name is, or rather was, Cassandra Woodsoul, though she would now introduce herself as Nina Treeheart. Quite the change if I do say so myself. This, I feel, makes her a very mysterious character. "Why has she changed her name?" You might be wondering, "Is she running away from something? Has she gotten herself in trouble?" Which are very valid questions, but you give her all too much credit for the situation she is in. All will be revealed in time.
She was not wholly alone. A few meters away from the rock she was standing on was a small tent, some bags, her clothes, a grazing horse and a very unhappy cat. The horse's name is Poppa and the cat's is Leo. Leo was smart for a cat and was grumpy because of the acclimate weather and he wanted to go into the tent behind him and curl up with Nina.
But Nina still stood in the middle of the field. She closed her eyes and tipped her head back letting the wind rip through her hair, twisting it in ways that if it had been done any other time by anything other than the wind it would have been extremely uncomfortable, yet it soothed her. The air was cool, which was, in part, why it was so refreshing.
She opened her eyes and looked up into the sky. It was starting to clear. She turned around, running her hands through her short Auburn hair and turned to look at Leo who was continuing to glower at her. Her Emerald eyes sparkled as she smiled warmly down at her furry companion as she walked over. Pippa snorted and stomped at her.
"Hungry Pippa?" Nina inquired and she pulled her pants on.
Pippa approached Nina and nosed her until she was forced to hug the affectionate horses head.
"Fine, let me finished getting dressed and I'll see if I can find you something other than the grass you've been nibbling on." The horse looked at her innocently. "Yes, I saw you. You can't trick me that easily."
Pippa whinnied excitedly and scampered around the tent as Nina finished dressing and started rooting around her bag looking for some food for the three of them. Eventually she produced a few apples, hard bread and cheese and some smoked fish.
She turned to Leo, "You really need to learn how to hunt. I can't feed you forever" she joked. Leo was not impressed and took his fish begrudgingly. Nina giggled.
"Here Pippa!" she called as Pippa came bounding over to her. "You're really more of a dog" she stated while holding out an apple for her beloved horse. She stroked Pippa's neck and the horse greedily gobbled up the two apples.
Nina sat down outside her tent next to Leo, leaned against her bags and nibbled on her bread and cheese. Leo, despite his outward standoffishness, nuzzled Nina's leg. She reached down and affectionately scratched behind his ear. The cat took this as an invitation to sit on her. He was a large cat so this didn't always work as well as he liked, but today Nina felt bad about leaving him out in the cold and let him. She stroked him affectionately.
She looked beside her were her sword and crossbow lay. She didn't really know why a simple crafts-person would need these two dangerous weapons, but at one point in her life she deemed it necessary so she didn't question her past logic. Her sword is special. It is twisty, has a fancy handle and had many charms hanging from it. A few made sense; they were religious icons from her preferred sect, others, not so much. Nina couldn't figure out why she'd have a charm that said "Woodsoul", "Cassy" or "The Knitting Knights". It's was all very odd, but Nina tried not to make a habit of questioning her past self.
The sun was starting to go down. Nina frowned at the sky, time to get ready for bed. She threw her bags into the tent, pushed Leo off and brushed Pippa. She curled up in her tent with her cat, closed her eyes and went to sleep.
