You say. "um."

"cause most people don't know."

"I guess it's like caring for someone else?"

"You don't know." Jess said. Something shifted. Suddenly you know that you've lost the chance. What could have been a night where you got into Jess's back seat. Where you reached your hands out and she let you touch her stomach. Where she reached out to you in turn, that night was long gone. Now you were just an awkward kid. Sitting on the hood of a girl's car while she wandered off under the moonlight. Barely even thinking about you.

"Hey - Jess?"

"What?" She answers. Barely turning around. But she answered so that means you can keep talking.

"You're right."

"I know I'm right."

"I mean you're right, I don't know what love is. I mean. How could I?"

"Duh."

"But someday I'll know. And I want to learn the right way cause what I see around here, that seems like a bad way to do it."

"What? Too many babies and domestic violence."

"Yeah."

"Or methheads all crazy dependent on each other. My aunt and uncle are like that
