The beginning of this task. I should begin by writing a synopsis, planning what is going to happen in this story.
There is a girl. There is always a girl.
She is young, and ordinary-looking. Glasses, long hair, she's pretty quiet, and gives the impression of always being about 15 mintes late for whatever it is she is doing. You can tell when she's with friends, for that is the only time she smiles. She might be in her early twenties, but then again maybe she isn't, for there is something, not often and nothing tangible, just the occasional glint in her eyes that suggests that she has seen a lot of life.
Then, there is a boy. Where you find a girl, especially this girl, you will usually find a boy. Unfortunately, this boy won't stay. Nor did the last one. The girl doesn't give up hope though, she /knows/ that the next one will stay forever. And if he doesn't, the one after him will.
It isn't a hopeful story, although the girl does hope. It isn't a happy story, even though it is about finding love. It's about love in the real world, the kind that makes you weak and hurt and elated and giddy and scared and happy, the kind that makes you realise that there is no such thing as fairy god-mothers,
It's not a love story though. Not in the traditional sense. There isn't a "happily ever after". I'm not even sure there's an "ever after". I guess we'll just have to find out together.
The story begins on a beach. The girl is looking out to sea, wondering what will become of her, now that her life's love is lost. This seems a little overly dramatic, but it's quite usual for this girl to think dramatic things. She is desperate for some drama in her life, like the lives she has been sold in books and on TV. She has lived her life until now just waiting for the moment that things will be like the movies, like the heroines of her favourite stories. She waits for her own story to begin, and she knows just how to handle any situation she finds herself in. She won't make the mistakes that they do, she won't eat the apple, nor disobey her parents and prick her finger. She will deliver her own messages, and won't allow him to believe she is really dead. She won't make any of these mistakes. She is wise.
