Sweat and blood poured into my eyes making me blind. Why now? I lurched back and ripped the leather chin strap apart, tossing the helm at the opponent I could barely make out, in front of me. I shook my head trying to fling the worst of it off my face. It would have to do. My current enemy took the distracted moment to lunge for a kill. I spun slightly to the side and into the attack, using the momentum to carry the heavy blade up and around. Luck was with me and I felt the blade cut deep through bone and flesh. The body fell limp and pulled the weapon from my grasp. I bent to retrieve my weapon. My hand wrapped around the hilt as something hit my right side, below my ribs. The blow knocked me sideways off my feet. The shock of the wound came quickly. I could feel something stuck in my side. I looked down to see a war-hammer head, broken off and sticking out of the plate armor protecting my side. My mind imagined the spike of the hammer pushing through the steel and chainmaille, pressing jagged chunks of my armor through my flesh and deep into the muscle. I fought the urge to pull the thing out, and tried to roll back to my feet. A body with two long arrows sticking from its chest told me why a second attack hadn't come to finish me off. I thanked the Lady with silent lips and wrenched my blade free from it's sheath of a corpse. There was chaos all around but I stood in a small bubble of calm. To my left a soldier in silver and red armor was overpowering a conscript peasant. The conscript couldn't have been more than fifteen summers and wouldn't last much longer against an opponent twice his age and strength. I charged and plunged steel through steel, flesh, muscle, and organs to come out the other side of the man. I hadn't hit any major organs but it would do enough damage to finish the soldier off in a few seconds. The conscript looked up to me, eyes wide with fear and awe.
“Good work soldier! For the King!” I shouted. The adrenaline helped to numb the pain in my side. I placed my foot on the downed enemy and retrieved my blade once more. The boy, before me, thrust his spear past me and to my right. I heard a scream filled gurgle and felt the hot spash of blood upon my face. The lull of battle ended and I lost myself in endless moments of death.
A short eternity later and I found myself standing at the top of a small hill. Horns sounded and all around I could see soldiers in red fast in retreat. I reached my arm up to join in the cheer of my fellow soldiers when my body alerted me that this was more than it was willing to deal with.
