On a Greyhound bus, somewhere between Gulfport and Memphis, Steven Cross sat, looking out the window, gazing at the snow in the fields as he passed.
He didn't notice the snow, or the fields. His mind was completely occupied. He didn't notice the other travelers, even though some were talking loudly and moving about.
His life would never be the same.
His mind kept replaying the phone call he had received just a few hours earlier. He was searching for something he may have missed, something that was said 'between the lines' or some mistake by the caller. Something.
Just 24 hours earlier, Steven had been looking forward to the golf outing planned for the coming weekend. He and his three best friends, Mark, Christian and Luke were to go the the Greenland Country Club for a day of beer, golf, and the usual silliness that followed their group wherever they went.
But golf was as far from his mind as the east is from the west now. Mark, Luke and Christian would arrive at the club and wonder where Steven was. After waiting a few minutes, they would call his cell phone, which would go unanswered, then they would go about their day, same as usual except for the unexplained absence of their friend.
