I felt my eyes glazing over as I stared at the blank page, the little line blinked at me, just waiting for me to write something so it could show me where I was. Except my mind was as blank as the paper.
I want to be a writer. I want to write novels and that's all I've ever wanted to do since I was about eleven. But how can I be a writer if I can't tell a story? How can I be a writer if I have no story to tell? I have plenty of characters and basic plots that I've tried to expand on but...none of it ever comes to life. They never become REAL like their supposed to. They are always just half baked ideas put into words. And to me, that is NOT what writing is. So, I am a writer who can not write.
What else do I know about writing? I thought. Well, I know a good character has flaws because otherwise their just Mary Sues. Real people have flaws and imperfections, so they will help make the character seem more real. Plus, good characters are kind of plot twists in themselves. They write the stories themselves! Contrasts are good but there has to be some rhyme and reason because the story has to make sense to the reader. Unfortunately, when I try to write flawed characters they come out two dimensional and over done. Mary Sues are easy, anyone can write them. Should I stick to what I'm good with? Why not. Well, let's call a spade a spade and call her Mary-Sue.
The video camera beeped quietly and a small red light started to flash, informing the girl that the camera was recording.
"Hi folks! Welcome to my Youtube channel. I'm so glad you could join me, it was getting pretty lonely here, by myself. 'Cause I'm SO not used to being alone." Cue the 'psh right' look.
"I'm Mary-Sue, and yes, don't we call love it when first names are two names smushed together?" Mary-Sue rolled her eyes and shifted her weight, uncrossed and recrossed her legs in criss-cross applesauce on her beige carpet.
"Umm a few interesting things about me...Well I'm fifteen, but I'm turning sixteen soon-yay driving!-and umm I have auburn hair that grows a bit past my waist. I call it mermaid hair." She smiled a cheesy smile. "I have three siblings, two sisters and one brother who are all older than me. But that's not interesting. I play guitar and a ukelele? Maybe I'll write you guys some songs! I eat a lot of chocolate and gain no weight, isn't that fabulous and weird? My sisters always curse me for it." She laughed here. "My parents are still together, which I hear is rare nowadays. I hardly study but get good grades anyway and I've never had a zit! Wow right?"
I grinned down at the page. Hello Mary-Sue, I hope you can get me out of my funk!
