I saw Satan one Summer night
between the soft short breaths of wakefulness and slumber
as the breeze blew in my attic window
In my minds eye he was a dog
the biggest and blackest
a doberman with a fearsome demeanor
He sat on a wicked perch
a vibrating growl deep in his throat
he grinned without moving his mouth
Then his muzzle did open
Despair and dread and
the all of Pandora's Box came flying out
His teeth gleamed through all these dark things
and he left without another sound
except for a message:
"Beware. Beware of what is to come."
