"What happened? Where's Alice?" I said, croaking.
"Alice is alright, she's sleeping at our place. Frank dropped us all off at the hospital and then left. I don't know what's going on; I'm just glad you're alright."
I tried to life myself up and groaned at the pain. At that moment, the nurse walked in, "You're not going to be doing that for a few days, boss. Glad to see you're up." She checked my IV and my clipboard. "Dr. Sanderson will be with you in just a bit." And she wandered back out.
And I'm now officially bored with this story. I thin I wanted to turn it into some sort of crime drama/detective story, but really, I feel like my characters would not be so much interested in solving the mystery as just getting out of town and to someplace where Alice would be safe from Frank or anyone else. My narrator is bed-ridden and won't really be up for any investigating, and I know Alice won't be. So when Frank's able to leave the hospital in a week or so, they collect their savings and decide to move to the coast. The narrator gets a nice job as a copy editor for a local newspaper; Cindy is pharmacy tech; Alice takes her middle name, Margaret, and works as a hotel concierge at one of the ocean-side resorts.
