southwell i believe, is the fairest track in the uk.
that's because the track is covered with fibresand.
what is fibresand you ask.Fibresand is sand and polyproylene fibres but is softer than polytrack and therefore has greater "kickback". It is more inclined to form lumps and does not cope well with very cold weather.
although there is a solid kickback, this racetrack is the best racetrack where times are concerned.horses run as fast as 38.6 m.p.h or as much as 40 m.p.h at short spurts.
generally speaking, this racetrack is not as fast as the epsom track.epsom has the fastest 5 furlong in the world.

epsom time at 5 furlong being 53.6 furlong.record set by indigenous on june 2,1960,while southwell's track record at 5 furlong 57.35 m.p.h was set by fyodor in january 1,2006, an almost 5 second difference between the two on two different surfaces with different characteristics.

the times at southwell are so true but the factors behind these are many.
first, when over 5 furlong, it is always good to be prominent or in the lead.only very good horses come off the race when the kickback is severe and only on a scow surface over 5 furlong.
high speed figures tend to be significant on this course.
a horse with an 85 and more speed figure can win a listed race over almost any distance.
a low to middle draw is preferable over the straight 5 furlong and it is noticed that when a high draw wins, the horse concerned almost always gives the stands rail a wide berth having been angled to its left.
the race then moves towards the center.even in big fields over the straight 5 furlong, the runners basically stick to their draw and race as straight as they can from start to finish.

the no 1 berth is the most troublesome place to be especially on slow going.when the rains fall, the going tends to be unique.it's not too fast and not too slow but berth one is not the best place to be as it tends to be soft and closest to the rail.
many runners swing wide over extended distances as to stay away from the soft/slow
surface.

as it was said before, time is an important factor here. e.g-king leo runs furlongs in 1 minute,13.5 seconds.
so if a horse runs 6 furlongs in 1 minute,16 seconds, then he is 3.5 seconds off the track record.if sir theo runs 6 furlongs in 1 minute,12 seconds with the same weight.
when the two horses meet, sir theo would would beat king leo by at least 4 lengths.
weight is another factor that applies to all horses here and one must not take the weight adjustments at face value.
the official handicapper knows what he is doing so do not try to re-assess or invent the wheel.
the horse are already handicapped and weight provides the answers to all your handicapping needs here.the weight for age table table is always there to study, so please study it.
five seconds equals one length in all distance.
one pound is equivalent to .20 seconds horse.
times are relevant and any horse running close to the track record here means he is a super fibresand horse.
