There'll be a Hot time in the old town tonight...
Light shone in his eyes. He was waiting for the voice, "Walk into the light" but it wasn't the heavenly light. It was the harsh neon of the station. He couldn't help being disappointed but he'd been doing the job he'd been trained for. He'd spent the last 9 years working on retrieval. He remembered his first "ReaPer" and there where thousands since but it was his failures that hurt the most.

The development of the AIReality system was something that came from the entertainment society. Films that used CG actors and scenery meant that costs were cut and actors could play themselves as 20 years old. The lesser wages and costs meant that new technology could be researched and created. Within 5 years, the first AIReality system was created. The actors and director could work in a virtual world. This meant that a actress that had been overindulging in food, drugs or alcohol could look like a starlet and not the ravaged hag that they'd become. 80 year old Jack Nicholson won the first AIReality movie, playing an 18 year old alien in "Philadelphia Crack"

It was taken by the game industry and then 2 years later, It was first shown to the public a year later and 6 months later, a cheaper reversed engineered system was on sale. People could enter their favourite TV show and watch or interact with the storyline. The best would be shown on a Saturday night, on terrestrial TV. Gamers could enter the game and play against the world. They'd feel the adrenaline rush, and a certain thrill... Medical wise, mental health patients were treated through supervised AI trips. Couldn't afford a holiday? Use your AIReality system. Arrange to visit friends on Interweb AIReality. You could trick you body into believing you were having a five course meal. Obese people found themselves loosing weight while fight "Orcs". They got exercise as the brain trigger the muscles. The public had a holodeck in every house.

The down side to all this came when people didn't return, They'd stay in the AI world because their real world wasn't working. Their bloated corpses found, when neighbours complained of the stench. There was AI Suicides. The player would disconnect the safety protocols and go and play the most violent games. To deal with this, the AIR station system was created. AIReality systems had to be registered to a station. They were monitored and the people who ran the stations could enter game worlds and protect the gamer. The difficulty with this was that player avatars were virtually no different from AI characters. He had developed a sense that pointed at "ReaPer"s but there had been times when AI's had populated the real person's flesh.
