The bus shook, and roared to life, vibrating with each rotation of the engine and belching heat behind it. In any Bastion city, polution laws were structly enforced to civillians and any automobile had to adhere to the zero emission, zero carbon, zero waste laws. Apparently, this particular bus did not meet that criterion, but Eowin figured it had been used for very little other than prisoner transport.
It lurtched forward and pulled off the tarmac and onto a service road that lead into the city. Once they neared the city the Bus was joined by four local secutiy cars that drove in front and behind it. Inside the city it was humid and hot, though it probably didnt help that almost thirty bodies were crammed into a sealed bus.It was intolerably hot and the smell was probably atroutious. It didnt really matter to Eowin though, he could not tell. He looked out the window and did what he could to wipe the sweat off of his face.
OUtside in the city they were passing though the slums. Most likely becasue it would be unsightly to have a prisoner transport go through Uptown. The Slums were charachterized by huge towers, filled past the breaking point with people. In order to house the excess population, many of the bigger Federation citied had build massive housig projects, each tower, supposedly able to house the equivalent to a neighborhood worth of people. While it did alleviate some of the Viral Spread of the Federation cities, it increased popluation desity by orders of magnitudes. Essentailly, the federation had consolidated the community to a building; each its own mini ghetto.
It was not uncommon, in the days before the war, to head about separete towers starting truf wars over government issued goods and products. The more the Federation pumped into the communities, the more that the stronger Towers had. gangs, gnag warefare, and entire urban wars broke out throughout the bastions, often to the point of requiring the interventiuon of federation military. Many of the middle and upper class would like to simply tear down the Ill-planned Tower projects, but none dare lobby to do so. After all, where would the riff-raff go it not to the Towers. They were, in themselves, merely a prison for the poor.
As the bus drove though, Eowin realized that he really had no idea what life in the Tower slums was like. HEaring about it in he Illyari news was on thing. but to see the actual conditions of the ghettoes, even in this, a bastion-city, was difficult.Dealers, pimps, hookers and well-armed thugs passed by as the Bus rumbled through. Occosionally, someone would hurl a rock or bottle at the bus.At one point, a kid even ran up to the bud and started yelling obcenities at the pisoners. It would have been strange, had it not seemed so in tune with the atsmophere around them. As the boy ran off again, Eowin noticed what he was sure was a pistol strapped to his ribs.
