I had finally done it. I smirked at my reflection in the mirror. So long, blond; say hello to dark blue. At last, maybe my mother would realize it was time to let go- I was fifteen, after all. I turned my head from side to side, examining my new haircolor from every angle. It made me look paler, slimmer; I thought that it even made my eyes look almost emerald.
It was perfect. Nobody could look at me now and deny that I was completely and utterly an adult. Hello world, it's me, Emmaline, like you've never seen her before. I smirked at my reflection, admiring the way the blue shown in the light.
"Emmy, darling! Gammy and Pipi are here!"
I glanced at the door. "Coming, Mama!"
I turned back to the mirror. Somehow, in that short span of time, my reflection had changed. I looked the same as always- chubby, sallow, with murky hazel eyes. Except for my hair, of course; but instead of looking distinctly indigo, it now seemed merely the color of nasty, thrift-store jeans.
"Emmy! We're waiting!"
"Just fifteen more minutes, Mama!"
I blinked back a couple of tears and reached for the unopened box on the bathroom counter. Nice 'n Easy 103: Natural Light Neutral Blond.
