I sit in my small wilting home on the outskirts of our city, not able to sleep. I glance over to where my older sister lies, oblivious to my unrest and wrapped around our bedsheets breathing heavily in and out. I look back out the window to the moonlight and frown, another day would soon begin and Ellie would head off to work while I go to school. I stare across the street looking at the other shabby, run down houses in dismay. Life would never get better here, the Presidents promises are empty. No action has been taken to help those in need, many in the South Side have been dropping like flies mostly of starvation but disease has spread fast. Any still living live in fear they'll be next to collapse and be carted off. I watch the sun rise over the horizon taking in the only beautiful thing left in this world. The pinkish gold hues melt together beautifully, I sit a moment enjoying it's beauty and eventually I rouse Ellie. She groans but rolls out of bed, standing as I pass her the heavy leather jacket she wears everyday. She yawns a thanks and pulls me into a quick hug before leaving for work. I hear her stomach growl as she shuts the door. Her long blond locks only just escaping its clutches. School doesn't start for another three hours, the North Side of the city are already in school, penciling away notes and taking their tests. I am restless, I pace trying to think of a way to get the food we need so desperately, the money from Ellie's job at the bakery only makes so much money. She pays for the house and I try to help us scrape by. Dad and Mom were both doctors, five years ago they were killed by an insane patient who had recently been transferred to their hospital, leaving Ellie and I alone. For the first year we got by with the help of family friends, but times got hard and people no longer had enough for even themselves. I kneel down and reach under the bed, taking my school bag out. It's a small messenger bag that I sling over my shoulder as I step out of the house closing the door behind me. I inhale the morning air smelling the sweetness, remembering how it was on the North Side, where they had grass. It smelled even better there. Here there was nothing but dirt and sand, I make up my mind and turn the corner to Lady Krystal's Soup Shop. Her prices are cheap, but not cheap enough I wonder if she has any leftovers to spare. She sees me coming from behind her stall and shakes her head sadly before I can even ask. I nod in understanding and walk on. There was nowhere else to go now I decide food is more important than school and assure myself what I am about to do is one hundred percent necessary to Ellie and me's survival. I leave the flap of my bag open as I walk through the empty streets, no one is awake yet so I walk by the school without attracting any attention. I swear I saw a pair of eyes following me, but when I double check, nobody's there. I play with my hair and eventually put it up, not wanting it to bother me today. I move even more silently down the street and sneak into the North Side of the city. I live in East City, supposedly long ago there were four cities. North, South, East, and West, each positioned just like their names on a compass. North City to the north, surrounded by the Aquitaine Mountains. South City always hot and surrounded by water, my teachers say it was on an island, whatever that is. West City to the west, surrounded by nothing but tall grasses and rolling hills. Finally my city in the
