Promises lost
"Miss Kate." Will said as he grinned at the stunned blonde. Kaytie turned and looked behind her, as if looking for an escape route that didn't involve the door that Will leaned against. "Damn," She said. She knew better, the stairs would only lead her back to the showers, but she could feel the intensity of the moment rising, and she wanted nothing more than to be out of the barn and away from the penetrating eyes that were staring at her.
Will could feel her awkward hesitation. He continued to grin, as he reached into his back pocket and pulled out a curry comb. "You might want to brush out them tangles before they get set, " Will said, pointing at the twisted mass of blonde hair cascading over her shoulders.
Kaytie laughed at that, remembering that James had the same suggestion earlier in the summer. "Well, you're not the first one to suggest that."
Will took a step toward her with the brush, and ran his fingers through the her wet hair. "you need some help with that, Kaytie?" He looked down into her green eyes, which softened for a minute and then turned a fiery shade. She broke his gaze, took the curry comb from his hand, hung it on the peg board behind her and strode toward the door. Will moved to the center of the door, so she had to squeeze by and she couldn't avoid brushing her body against him as she made her exit. "Maybe you will sing for us at dinner?" Will smiled after her. Kaytie looked over her shoulder at him with a mix of amusement and irritation. She couldn't believe she had been caught singing in the shower. Will tipped his hat in her direction, and said quietly to himself, "See you soon pretty Kitty."
Kaytie rubbed the ends of her hair with the thick towel as she walked back toward her cabin. The path led past the swimming hole, and she stopped and watched as James walked to the edge of the platform to dive into the pond. She hated watching, there were parts of the pond that were so shallow. Fearless, James executed a front flip and dove into the water. His lean muscles glistened in the sun as he emerged from the pond. He gave her a wave, "Come in and play for a while Kitty?" She started to walk that way, but when she caught a shadow behind her, she changed her mind. "I gotta change for supper,James." She walked down the path, leaving both boys behind.
