Forty Seconds
The straps were tight. I couldn't move my shoulders up, and my arms were pushed to my sides by a strap that went over my torso. Two straps hugged my legs. I was very hungry, and even more thirsty. The gauze wicked all moisture from my mouth. My tongue felt rough against the roof of my mouth. Was I going to die here?

No. No way. Not me, not anyone. I, Jack, take it upon myself to do whatever is in my power to save myself, and then to save any others! And with that, I began to assess my situation.

The situation was pretty grim. I couldn't move much because of the tight straps. But... If I managed to get off the lower strap on my left leg, I had a slim emergency kit hidden inside my shoe that I could grab with some creative maneuvering. It was my ticket out of this place.

I splayed my knee out and up as far as it could go. My shoe caught under the other leg at the lower strap. I pulled my leg as hard as the straps would allow, and there! It was through!

Without the shoe. My heart skipped a beat when the shoe hit the ground with a thuddle. I bit my tongue in anger. How was I getting out here now?! My left leg, now partly free, couldn't reach the shoe. I tried flexing my leg to move the bed, but the bed was too solid. I was angry at myself for losing my shoe due to my stubborn impatience - and I was angry at that guy for not believing my story. What an ass!

I decided to slip my other leg out and get as free as I could. My arms slipped out with only moderate struggle, and I felt the big steel buckles on the straps for the first time. I had nothing to pick the locks because my shoe was on the ground. Upset, I punched the air. I wanted to scream, but that would alert the guards. I grabbed the strap that covered my shoulders. Shuffling my body down, I was able to push the strap into my mouth.

The strap above my waist was too tight to move it up or down my body, so I decided that the next step to take would be to chew out of the top strap.

Progress was painfully slow, and soon my jaw was tired of chewing on the nylon. I took a small break, legs comfortably bent and arms crossed.
Not long into the break, there was a knock at the door, and the shadows of two feet appeared in the thin ray of light at the doorway.
