You know what Kai did today?
Besides the usual I mean. You know... not talking, looking at his feet, studying all day and night, and generally being his old alien self.
Today he actually carried on a conversation with someone other than me.
There was this girl, right? And she tripped in the hallway while walking back from the bathroom during class. I don't know who this chick was; I never had her in any of my classes and she doesn't do anything after school. But apparently Kai was walking TO the bathroom at the same time and he - surprisingly - helped her up. He did it silently I hear... He just held out his hand, helped her up, and started walking to the bathroom again as soon as she let go of his hand. She yelled "Thank you!" to him, and the rumors say he hesitated, then kept on walking. I'm only half-skeptical. I always knew he had something in his heart, even if he never showed it to anyone except me.
So anyway, during lunch, she saw him and came up to him. I know this one from first-hand experience 'cause we were eating lunch together that day. He was just reading his book and I was trying to get a conversation going when she strolled up. Surprisingly, he actually talked to her! Here's how I remember it:
" Hey, thanks for helping me up earlier."
"...No problem." (Note that he never looked up from his book as he said this.)
"Mind if I sit here with you guys?"
"Okay."
And then she sat on the other side of him. She had bought her lunch and the two of us got ours from home. I think they were selling chicken enchiladas or something like that. So she was eating and I was eating and he was just reading.
Then she says, "So, what do you like to do for fun?"
"Read."
She waited a sec to see if anything else would come out, but nope.
"By the way, I'm Joanne. I just moved here yesterday."
He was silent again, but he spoke right as everyone got their hopes down. "Kai."
I told her that he wasn't too talkative and she didn't care. She told me the whole story and started going on about how nice he was and how nobody at her old school would have helped her up. I wanted to break it to her that nobody would ever do that here, but I never did because I didn't want to burst her bubble.
Also, you could tell that Kai was burying his face in his book 'cause he was embarrassed. But the bell finally rang and Kai hurriedly got up and went to class, not even waiting for me.
