It's kind of strange to think that I'd ever be connected to Leila. If all this hadn't happened, we'd be living completely seperate lives who just happened to live next door. The main difference is she's two years younger than me. The other is, our group of friends are completely different. I used to hang out all the time, party hard and drive around. She had a close knit of friends, but I normally saw her wandering school alone. Like I said, I partied, and she studied and read. After school, I would drive home in my green Jeep, while she'd be waiting for a ride, reading some lame novel. Our parents were friends, but we never talked much. Just simple awkward laughs and sideways glances at the uncomfortable situation we were both in. She's also South Asian, a Pakistani to be exact,so we weren't even culturally tied. My dad told me I had a drop of South Asian in our blood, along with the 2% Irish and a quarter French and Greece, as well as half British and another drop of Cherokee Indian. To be honest, I don't think we have any living relatives from any of the places, and I can only speak English, but whatever. It impressed a lot of girls. I would tell anyone that, until I told Leila.
"You're white" she said.
"No, I'm a quarter-" I countered
"You're white" She cut me off and walked away.
I figured arguing would be pretty useless.
We don't argue a lot. Leila is a lot more chill than a whole bunch of girls I've met. A lot more sane than a bunch of girls I've dated, and a lot easier to talk to than Vanessa. My last ex-girlfriend. Vanessa was gorgeous. I guess that's why I never cared that she was a complete psychopath. She loved attention, and she easily got it from guys, and sometimes girls. She was one of those "anniversary crazed" girlfriends. "July 1st, the first time we talked..March 3rd, the day you asked me out...March 10th when we made it official" If I forgot ONE she would fake-cry and hit my arm then avoid me for a while, till I apologized and promised to do her favorite things, such as shop and gossip. She would whine and bitch about the "problems" in her life and get mad when I tried to give advice instead of giving sympathetic nods. Basically, I'm glad it ended.
So, if none of this ever happened, I would be walking to class with the most crazy, but beautiful girlfriend in the world, getting high and stoned on the weekends, hanging out with friends everyday and driving to places like the beach, the movies, the mall and whatever else we could think of, all while ignoring the existence of the kid in the house that was right next to mine.
But it all did happen.
By one of those moments that only a few seconds could have changed our world, our parents were carpooling together from a night out. On their way, they got hit by some drunk ass going 75 while it was raining. The four of them died instantaneously, making us orpans the same night.
