Evelynn thought he was a bit too “normal” looking to be the brooding type, but that was exactly how he appeared to her. He wasn’t dressed in dark colors or wearing an oversized sweater or anything. His dark-wash jeans, grey v-neck t-shirt and navy blue Vans seemed completely normal. Evelynn couldn’t figure out what it was exactly, but something about this sandy haired boy intrigued her. For the rest of class she was too focused on what it was that her thoughts didn’t drift to Rush again. When the rest of the class began to move as they put notebooks away, Evelynn was surprised to look at the clock and see that it was already 8:52. Class was over, and Evelynn had survived the first day. She looked to her right again to get another look at the boy who had captured her attention, but he had already left the classroom. She stood from her desk, lifted her unopened backpack from where she’d dropped it when she walked in, and left the room as well.
Evelynn didn’t have another class for an hour, and she knew her roommate would still be asleep as she didn’t have class until 11 this morning. Rather than go back to her room, Evelynn decided to make her way to the little coffee shop nearby to pass the time. The most interesting people spent time in coffee shops, and Evelynn loved to sit with a vanilla soy latte in one hand, a book in the other, and eyes and ears attuned to the curious people around her. She quickly made her way to the shop and was soon settled at a corner table where she could easily see the lay of the entire place, a perfect seat. Evelynn was reading her way through the classics and was just starting The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger. It was a commonly referenced book that she figured wouldn’t hurt to read. As she was pulling her used, worn copy out of her backpack, she was aware of a body sitting down at the table next to the one at which she was sitting. She thought nothing of it and proceeded to open the book to the first page: “If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were…” The sound of quick writing from the table next to her distracted Evelynn from finishing even the first sentence. She shifted her gaze from the open book to where the sound was coming from on her left.
