Imaginary Girlfriend
"No," he said sharply, "I don't like at all. What a ridiculous waste of bubblewrap."
The dirtiest laugh Alex had ever heard followed. Actually, it might have been a cackle. In retrospect, Alex realised that yes, it was definitely a cackle.

Alex never found out Hannah's views on the installation. He did, however, discover her taste in sandwiches. She shared her fat turkey and marmite creations with him as they both perched on a low wall in the mill's car park. That was the day Alex became a marmite convert.
Hannah changed a lot of things. Alex should have inferred that much from his easy acceptance of impromptu picnics and bohemian flavour combinations. Luckily for him he was in the throws of some strange fit of liberation otherwise he would have missed out. Big time.

Two months later Alex was beginning to cautiously consider Hannah his girlfriend. He wasn't prepared to get too carried away since he only saw her twice, maybe three times a week at the most. And he still hadn't quite persuaded her to spend the night with him. Hannah seemed to have an aversion to notion.
One evening after she had reclaimed her discarded clothing and was pulling on her boots, Alex laughingly called her Cinderella. Hannah merely dropped a kiss onto his nose and dissapeared into the night.
She was similarly cagey about allowing her own space to be invaded, which was how she interperated any attempt Alex made to broach the subject of his visiting her home. To date he never had and until he did there was no way in good concience he could change his facebook status to "in a relationship".
He tried to explain that to Hannah but she had just wrinkled her nose.
"Are you trying to tell me that unless something is published on the internet it holds no value?" Her question sounded innocent enough, but Alex had learned that it was potentially either the start of a rant about the evils of modern communications or, if she was feeling generous, the beginning of a long philosophical debate. Alex would ultimately loose, partly because he didn't have the stamina for such things and partly because he was a results driven man and when it came to Hannah conversation was not his primary goal.
