feet, but the inside of them was lined with soft and nourishing gel and atop that there was a soft lining of real arctic fur. These wonderful boots provided Lorissa with extreme comfort and not the least bit of pain.

She glanced out of the window in her room. This window showed her a view of the basement instead of the courtyard. Her father had built this window two years ago, because the door to the basement was always unlocked. For this reason many thieves often broke in. This was also why there were so many strays gathered up in the basement, for they had found it as a shelter from the fierce weather in the winter, and Lorissa had happily allowed them in, knowing that the dogs would alert her if any thieves managed to get into the castle. So from the window she could have a perfect view of anything going on in the basement. You could enter the kitchen from the basement, but the kitchen door was always locked so even if thieves broke in, they wouldn't be able to break into the main part of the house. Woe to any thieves who broke in thinking about riches for they would find themselves amidst a group of ravaging dogs. But when Lorissa glanced hopefully out of the window, she saw pitch-black darkness. What else would she expect dead in the night? Lorissa stood up boldly and walked silently towards the door and walked out into the drafty hall.

Lorissa passed plenty of rooms on her way down to the kitchen. On the upper floor, she passed by the bedrooms which had belonged to all her family members. She had four siblings, three brothers and one sister. Her sister, who had been the oldest, died a particularly gruesome death involving a hot oven. This had greatly saddened Lorissa, as she had only been seventeen when her most caring and loving sibling had passed away. The rest of the siblings had never paid much attention to Lorissa, and Lorissa liked it that way. It was either Helena's care and love, or nobody's. Lorissa had been an aunt to three nieces and one nephew, all of them children of her siblings, and she missed them all greatly. They had all once lived in the castle and enjoyed themselves, but they were teenagers when their parents died. They were full-grown and old enough to live by themselves.
