This is not a story. It is just me taking some time to vent my frustration at the people who still feel that they are somehow better than others because of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or intelligence.
First off, I'm an atheist, so I don't understand faith in a higher power. However, that does not give me the right to ever feel superior to a Christian or a Muslim or a Jew or any other religious person. Sometimes I do, and I'll admit to that, but I keep it to myself! I treat them with the same politeness and respect that everyone deserves right off the bat. After all, there is much more to people than just their religion.
I'm also straight, but I have a gay older brother. I live in a state where it is illegal for gays to get married, and I don't understand that. What gives the government the right to decide that if my brother finds a man he loves, he's not allowed to get married? I know he could go to other states to get married, but he shouldn't have to! This is his home, and he should be allowed to sign a piece of paper that formally links him to whomever he wishes to marry. And I don't get why some people are so against gay marriage! HOW DOES IT AFFECT YOU IF TWO GUYS OR TWO GIRLS WANT TO BE TOGETHER FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES? HOW DOES IT AFFECT YOU IF THEY WANT TO ADOPT A CHILD? There are plenty of children who have terrible heterosexual parents, but you don't see anyone claiming a man an a woman can't adopt a child.
It just makes me so angry. What gives Representative Stick-Up-His-Ass to decide that my brother can't pursue his dreams just because he happens to like men? Or Senator In-The-Closet who decides my cousin can't adopt a child with her life partner?
I thought getting all my thoughts out would make me feel better, but it has just made me more upset and frustrated with this place. I mean, humans have come so far, but our ideas about some things are still stuck back in the dark ages.
