Brandon is a sixteen year old conspiracy theorist who uncovers an alien plot to overthrow Earth and tries to intervene. Having been labeled a conspiracy-obsessed loon all of his life, his motivation is naturally to have control over his life. He feels that every aspect of his daily life, from what kind of toothpaste he uses to the channels he sees on TV to how many times a year he gets sick, is controlled by some sort of higher up organization with its fingers in a lot of pies. He has issues with feeling helpless, and when he thinks he sees one of his conspiracies in action, he snaps and sets off to reclaim that control he feels he has lost.
His goal in the story is to avenge his mother’s death and stop the impending alien invasion of Earth by the dying race of A’khrath. Standing in his way is Leonardo, the extra-terrestrial who impregnated (and thusly killed) his mother, the remaining loyals of A’khrath, and their hybrid children—all three of which will stop at nothing to ensure survival of their species. Well, them and his own inadequacies, of course. He isn’t exactly an almighty slayer of alien super-races.
His “wake up call” will come when Leonardo rescues him from the mountain lion. It would have been in the best interest of A’khrath to let the lion kill him—there would be no body to dispose of, no murder trail to cover up to avoid drawing attention to the A’kraths—and yet Leo saved his life. This is the moment when he begins to trust Leo and believe all of those stories he tells him about how experiencing humanity is changing him and making his job harder to do with indifference. This moment is, really, when he begins to learn to trust at all.
Brandon worries as his mother’s health seems to drain from her and blames Leonardo, her shady boyfriend, for her eventual demise. Brandon chases after Leonardo when he tries to run away after his mother’s murder and discovers when he catches him mid-transformation in a rest stop bathroom that he isn’t from this world at all. To avoid another murder and drawing more attention to themselves, the leader forces Leonardo to bring Brandon with him as he makes his way to Colorado. Along the way Brandon learns to trust when the alien rescues him from a mountain lion and then later takes him to a friend’s house to rest when he falls ill. Brandon is attacked by Leonardo’s friend and forced to flee punishment with him when Leo avenges him and kills his friend.
