Rangi Aldis watched a cluster of sparkling sylphs fly along a Vitalvan cruiser as it slowly drifted towards the Mid NoAm space terminal. The luminescent beings fed off the remnants of dark energy that mainly existed outside the rapidly disintegrating dimensional fold that encased Earth.
Laying among the grass near his home in a small patch of prairie in Southwestern Michigan, Rangi remembered his first encounter with the Vitalvan and the odd interest they showed in his hyperactive, overachieving, excitable 13-year-old self.
Rangi was among those first contacted by the Vitalva, who were the only space faring species allowed to move past the veil that separated Earth from the greater universe. They arrived as Earth began to plummet into darkness in the form of brilliantly glowing vessels, which brought the light that illuminated the way for mankind.
The perplexing beings defied everything known to science, their raindrop shaped heads contained just two large clear pearlescent eyes that held a stunningly peaceful gaze and the Vitalva did not have any mouth to speak from and communicated by telekineses, allowing only those they wanted to hear access to what they said in their airy and wistful voices. Not everyone could hear the Vitalvan voice, even if a particular being wanted to be heard.
Their slender, hourglass shaped bodies relied on an unknown method for movement, as their tentacle-like appendages had no means of supporting their surprisingly heavy body that could mysteriously shift into an etherized state and either float in an opalescent mist or disappear completely.
With the Vitalva, who bordered on the age old concept of magic came many more beings and events that hearkened to the fairy tales of lore. Along with the sylphs came a menagerie of creatures long thought to be merely a figment of early human societies collective imagination. Foals where inexplicably worn with functional wings, giant magnificent birds best described as Phoenixes as well as gryphons filled the air. The last remaining wilds came host to graceful unicorns, savage manticores, and lumbering trolls.
