Yesterday (04.30.2010) my son and I were left alone which does not happen very much in a family of five. Renee went to the beach again, she went there last weekend too...oy' via. Alix went to a friends house for a birthday party and Kirstin was at her play performance at her high school. We were supposed to bring the brother of the birthday girl home with us but that got screwed up by Seth (birthday bro). I even went and bought a video game for the Nintendo dsi for them-I don't have the extra money to do that, but yet I did it anyway to keep the kids occupied. Anyway, that fell through so Tyler and I decided to go and see a movie...there wasn't that many movies out at this time that we could go see together (Tyler is only 10)...but he really wanted to see Percy Jackson and the lightning thief, which he has been reading the series for the past few months. So we went there instead of having dinner. We got a big popcorn to share, he got a Slurpee and I got I diet coke. We got there just in time for the movie...we missed all the previews which is kind of a bummer because I like seeing what will be coming up soon.
THE MOVIE
The lightning thief was pretty predictable throughout most of the movie. The bucktoothed substitute teacher creeped me out a bit. The way she kept staring at Percy while in the museum. How convenient they were learning about the Greek gods when she attacked and when Pierce Brosnen was asking pointed questions to Percy about demi-gods. I was surprised when [read with care...spoiler alert] Pierce's character was have horse/half man after he was in a wheel chair the first 30 minutes of the movie. Another part I enjoyed was Uma Thurman as Medusa.
I did notice a few things that drove me a little nuts. One was the that whenever there is an old box in whatever movie; you MUST blow dust off the top of the box before opening it. Another thing I noticed is that all hero's must have rich blue contact lenses...especially at the end of the movie. Both Percy and his girlfriend had the blue contacts at the end. Another problem is that the hero MUST be set up by another for no apparent reason. Luke (some blond haired blue eyed boy who is another demigod who does not go with the clan to save Percy's mom) was the one who actually stole the lightning bolt that Percy was accused of doing.
All and all, I enjoyed the movie. It was entertaining, but was no Harry Potter or Clash of the Titans which it seems to be competing with. I don't think there will be another movie out about Percy, but the movie we did see was goog. One other note,, Percy looked alot like Christian Slater...I wonder if they are related.
