Unfathomable
The figure of a man broke through the darkness, stepping out from the shadows and into the light of a nearby street-lamp. The fog that night seemed to be repulsed by him, behaving as though it feared to touch the man. It moved curiously out of his way, only to reform behind him. As he stood still in the darkness, it seemed to circle him as though it were trying to find a way in. This was his doing, perhaps.
A cat, golden-eyed with red fur, sat in the man's path. He stared at it with a look of intense interest. It stared back at him, equally intrigued; it wasn't aware that it'd gotten in his way. The man smiled awkwardly at the cat, his mouth nearly tripling in size. It was the grin of a disturbed man. The cat simply purred back, all the while keeping the same distance away from him as the fog. He pulled a cigar from his jacket pocket, and it ignited with nothing more than a glance. He had no intent to smoke the cigar, however. He looked at the cat curiously once more, than gently tossed the cigar forward. It fell slowly, spinning end over end, leaving a trail of smoke behind it. Then the tip touched the cat on the nose. There was a pause; the cigar standing up, frozen in the air. For a moment, the fog ceased to spin and the world seemed still. "Crack" the sound echoed outward, and the cat burst into flames.
The man continued on his path, all manner of weather avoiding the slightest abrasion against any part of his body. A small pile of ash lay where the cat had existed moments before. Without glancing back the man began to whistle. It was a slow melody; a beautiful sound that would surely captivate any who heard it. As he whistled the fog enveloped him, as though it were no longer afraid.
