The Landlord
The Landlord had failed to muster sleep over the past three days . Considering the scale of the thoughts that beseiged him it was not hard to imagine why. His tenant Dr. L of house number 5 in the Githeri complex had failed to pay his rent for over three months.

Since the landlord was a man retired from the civil service and his wife a housewife for many years he had been seriouslly affected by his Dr.L's inability to pay. But that is not what made him sleepless

When it had been clear Dr. L was not going to be able to pay on time , the Landlord had approached him to try and come up with a more bearable payment plan for his longtime tenant and that had been his first mistake

What the landlord was not aware of was that Dr. L was a sociopath. He was willing to exploit anyone and everyone. Distinctions did not exsist in his mind to tell bad from good and he was perfectly capable of turning any situation to suit him and when the landlord approached him to talk about his rent he saw an opportunity

He listened patiently as the landlord explained that he would need tuition for his two eldest children very soon and that his properties were his primary source of income. He also explained that he was not an unreasonable man and given the harsh economic climate he did not wish to alienate his tenant but to come up with a payment plan that would be agreeable to both of them

Dr.L agreed with everything the landlord said while plotting his reply. When the landlord was done talking he made a suggestion. He knew some loan sharks who would lend the landlord the money he needed as Dr. L sourced for the rent which he was sure he would get in a weeks time. The only catch was that they would require collateral in form of some property.

Dr. L did not think this would be a problem because he was sure beyond reasonable doubt that he would have paid by the end of the week. The Landlord was satisfied and went away thinking he had the best possible tenants. He met the loan sharks , handed him the title deeds to his flat and got the money. He rested easy knowing his children would go to college on time .

The Landlord knew he was in trouble when Saturday dawned and Dr. L had not bothered to call him and had in fact switched off his phone. He also did not get to the flat till way past one am. By this time the loan sharks were calling him every hour reminding him he had about seven days before his flat became theirs .

And that is how the Landlord had failed to sleep. Despite his best efforts over the past three days he had failed to contact Dr. L. He had postponed everything choosing to sit in the flats shade and wait for Dr.Ls arrival but he proved to be a slippery man.

Finally in exasperation he had slid a notice under Dr.Ls house that he expected him out by morning. He then asked a friend for a loan and was able to secure the title deeds for the flat. He was so so mad.

That evening, Dr. L came to his house . The lady a demure woman in her late forties had been sent to beg for clemency by her brother . She did not know what her brother had done. By the time the landlord narrated what had happened she was speechless. She was aware that her brother was unscrupulous but this was a new low.

The Landlord sputtered through his narration because of his anger. He would not relent. Not that Dr.L's sister wanted to proceed with the clemency talks. It was beyond her how anyone could be capable of such evil . That she was the same flesh and blood as this evil.

Dr. L dissappeared and the landlord evicted what was left of his family and confiscated their property to pay up the rent arrears.
