Jericho's Character Interview
How was your life at home?
As good as it could be, given the circumstances. My mother died giving birth to me, my father raised me alone after that. His work as a trader kept him out of my reach, and it took him even farther. When I was thirteen, he went wastemad. The last time I saw him, he was being led like an animal to the Isolation, with the other Wastemad. After that, I sold almost all of what he had, and kept the rest. If it wasn't for Rainor's family... Well, I may not be here now. They raised me, when I let them, that is. I had to grow up pretty fast.
What is your main drive in life?
To make Dad proud, I suppose. I work hard. I try to be the man he would want me to be.
Is humanity fundamentally good or evil?
Probably a mixed bag. I mean, we all are bastards, sometimes. Moreso for the Wilders and the Raiders. But I suppose they're jut trying to eke out a living, too. But, the Lies...? They're just fiends. Bad all the way down.
How do you fight?
As little as possible. [laughs] Rainor was the scrapper growing up, always pulling us into fights. But, I finish what I start. I had my obligatory training in the Compulsory Guard. I enjoyed the grappling and hand-to-hand training and was pretty good at it, too. Only had to use it a few times against those damned Raiders. Anyway, I wasn't cut out to be a guardsman. The armor was too heavy to move easily in, but I did have a strong swordarm. The Craft training, though? Well, [laughs] the Divines didn't give me much talent there. Besides, that's for those who want to live and die in the Temple as guards or priests, or for those who don't mind the idea of an early death. Julian's Craft is good, and he tries to teach me some tricks... But it never sticks with me.
Why do you fight?
Well, when I was in the Guard, it was because I HAD to. But, there still is always a sacred duty to protect our home. Outside -- I fight to survive. The Lies won't take me like my father.
Who do you fight?
Wilders and Raiders. Sometimes the Lies, but ALWAYS the Lies. Injustice, inequality.
What is your greatest fear?
Going wastemad like my father.
What is your most treasured material posession?
My father's sword.
Who is your closest friend?
Rainor. He's my brother. If his family hadn't taken me in... Well, who knows? I might be out there with Dad. Or dead.
What are your thoughts on the idea of love?
Love is a risk. Out here, who knows who lives to tomorrow? Or if they'll still be themselves after another hour of fighting the Lies.
What are your favorite pasttimes?
Sparring with Rainor, playing chess with Julian, tending the garden.
Where did you get your name?
Jericho, after some story Dad heard from the other survivors out in the Wastes. Some ancient magic city or something. I never remembered all of it. I think he just liked the name.
Where did you grow up?
Here. In Haven, like anyone my age that I know. Anyone outside of here is wastemad, Wilders, Raiders or holed up in another settlement.
What do you do for a living?
I maintain my garden and sell the extra. Dad also gave me an eye for finding the value in the junk he finds everywhere. So, I do okay selling scavenged and repaired stuff, too.
Do you like surprises?
I'd like there to be less surprises, honestly. With the way the Lies can change your world in a blink, surprises normally mean death or wastemadness out here.
Do you think you're intelligent?
There are plenty others smarter than me, that's for sure. I mean, I got by in school. Sniping answers off of Julian helped, though. [laughs] I suppose I'm older now, and I'm learning there is much more to learn from others than I would gain by thinking that I'm wiser than them would.
What is your favorite color?
Green. Brown. The color of good soil and healthy crops.
What would you change of your past?
Hmm... Well, who knows? I mean, lots. But, that's not really an option, is it? I would have listened more. To Dad. To the Elders. I missed out on a lot of wisdom growing up.
What is your sacred ideal?
Everyone deserves a fair chance. By rights, I shouldn't have had one growing up. But, because of the charity of others, I'm who I am today. If I hadn't I would be taken by Raiders, killed by the Wilders or the Lies, or wastemad like Dad.
What are your childhood memories?
The memory that sticks out the most to me is the time that Dad took me out into the Wastes w
