Then he’s wailing on the guy. The bum’s crying, the rest of these guys are laughing. A couple of them throw their bottles against the wall.
Call me a coward, but slowly, I get up and start to walk away. I’ve seen bum beatings before. It’s better for everyone if I’m not around when this guy’s head splits open.
I’m almost out under the streetlights before one of these goons sees me.

Just like that, I’m fucked. I could run for a little while, but they’d catch me and then just hit me harder. So I freeze, and they’re on me in a second.
I was right, there’s five of these guys. They make a circle around me. My face is caught dead in the light.
“Holy shit," one of them says.

“Man, won’t even make a difference if we fuck her up, with a face like that."
The way these guys are talking, it makes me edgy. Without thinking I push the one closest to me, hard and fast as I can. Move quick enough, and I might still be able to get out of here without having to swallow any of my teeth.
The guy falls and yelps.
“You dumb bitch!"
Christ, I pushed him back onto his own broken bottle. He’s holding his bleeding hand with his good one.

Two of the other guys are on me, one holding each of my shoulders, and the guy I pushed, he’s holding his hand in front of my face.
“Look!" He’s screaming, "Look what you did, you fucking cunt!"
One of them has his hand on the back of my head. He’s rubbing my nose in it like a god damn puppy.

Before I can stop myself, I’ve broken free this guy’s buddies and I’ve got him by the wrist. Before any of this makes sense, I’m standing behind him and I force his hand up and back until I hear the meat and gristle pop of a dislocated shoulder. Even this weak, I can do this as easily as you’d flick a light switch, only here, the switch plate has a mouth, and it’s screaming.
