"We were wondering if you know that guy?"
"No, why would I know him?"
"Well, you do theatre, he seems weird like that."
I had to forcibly keep my eyes from rolling back in my head. I do theatre so clearly I know every creepy weirdo for miles.
"Oh, well he's not that kind of weird. Apparently he's a whole different type of weird than me."
"Come on now, KC, don't be like that, you know what I mean."
"Alright, let's pretend I do. Anyway, I don't know him but I don't like him."
"Yeah, he's freaking us out. He's not one of the dads."
"Too young for that. What is he, 21? And he's not giving off a Dad vibe either."
"Shelby says there aren't any new kids at the school either, so he's not an uncle or anything that we haven't met before."
I almost laughed out loud at that. It takes a really special type of person to assume she knows everything the way Shannon, and I guess Shelby does. I didn't burst her bubble. I just nodded and stood on the edge of their group as they debated calling the police, or telling the principal, I was just waiting for one of them to threaten to tell her mother when I decided to just figure the guy out the direct way.
I heard their whispers behind me, all abuzz about what I was up to and what I would do next. If my heart wasn't drumming its way through my chest I would have had big fun at their distress but instead I just strolled over toward the creepy guy like I casually confronted strangers all day.
"Hey there. Are you new at picking your kid up? Are you by the right door?"
"What?"
Creepy and stupid, a winning combination. I tried again.
"I haven't seen you picking anyone up here before, are you sure you are in the right place?"
"What business is it of yours?"
"Hmm, well, this is my kid's school and I keep an eye out for things that aren't quite right.
"No, why would I know him?"
