Merideth In The Men's Room
“Take my picture.”
“Here?”
“Yeah.”
Meredith had just finished pushing down the bottom part of her dress past her hips. All the pink sequins and underlying pink fabric were now back in their proper, uncreased place. The crumpled ball of toilet paper that was in her right hand was flung backwards, landing in a corner that inexplicably already contained soggy bits of toilet paper.
It was a small miracle that no one had come into the bathroom the entire time we were in there. Now - with Merideth's sudden need to document the moment - we were just toying with chance. If we would get caught, they would kick us out. Even worse, we could be barred from coming back for quite some time. That was something I certainly couldn't handle - wouldn't know what to do with myself if this bar was no longer a viable, nightly option.
All of this was timed to coincide with the familiar, early-week moment when the bartender would note that there was barely anyone at the bar, so it wouldn't be a big deal if he went out back with the cook to smoke some weed. On most occasions, he would be gone for about ten minutes. As best as I could tell, we were creeping up on that mark; this photographic pause would have to be done quickly.
My jacket was on the hook behind the stall door. I reached into the inner pocket, pulled out my digital camera, and turned it on. As I did this, she gathered herself in front of the toilet. She put one hand on her hip and the other hand on the back of her head.
"Okay," she said.
She was trying to strike some sort of "come hither" pose. But it wasn't working. More than anything else, she looked uncomfortable - like someone who had no idea how to appear seductive. Merideth's mind was racing, trying to figure out how to pull it off, but this was the best she could come up with in such a hurried instance.
The background didn't help, of course. The handicapped stall only gave us so much extra room; in trying to get all of her in the frame, I had to angle myself against the corner of the stall, opposite to where all that toilet paper had been flung. This provided the shot with a background featuring the toilet paper debris and a full view o the bowl, which I hadn't previously noticed had piss in it.
